Before the Europeans colonized this continent and began building frame structures like barns, sheds and garages, where did the Barn Swallows nest?

I don't know of any records of where Barn Swallows nested pre-European. I would assume that they nested in sheltered areas under overhangs, somewhat as Cliff Swallows and Cave Swallows do today. It's quite possible that they were early adopters of human habitats as nesting places, assuming that various people built semi-permanent shelters for summer living and allowed the swallows to share the space. That's pretty much all speculation, of course, unless someone turns up some observations written down by early Europeans.

That's a really good question that I was thinking about just today.

We have 14 barn swallow nests in our no longer used dairy barn.

Let me know if you get a good answer.

Swallow nest in a variety of places such as under bridges or street lights. Originally they used cliff overhangs. If you can put up with the mess they make, let them stay especially until their young leave the nest. Swallows eat insects like mosquitoes.
