It is a cake in name only. Just like how a Boston Cream Pie is actually a cake, even though the name would imply otherwise.
Pie has a crust, and cake does not, right? Cake is usually made with flour, cheesecake is usually not, right?
If it is an instant or no-bake cheesecake, it is a pudding pie.
If it is a traditional baked cheesecake, it is a custard pie.
If it is traditional, but without a crust, it is a freestanding custard.
Now that that's settled, cut me a little slice. No, bigger than that. Perfect. Yum...

new york cheese cake looks more like a cake because it has a cake like crust. my cheese cake looks more like a pie because it has a graham cracker crust. either way, i think it's called cheese cake for a reason.

I'd say, above all, it's A-mazing.
Damn I love cheese cake...especially with cherries on top....
Since I chose to "answer" this question, my vote is for "cake," dictionary.com says: A cake having a firm custardlike texture, made with cream cheese, cottage cheese, or both, and sometimes topped with a jamlike fruit mixture.
Regardless, it's delightful.
