Yeah... Shame on me for accusing a particular group of (gasp) liking butterscotch... Well... I'm not at all ashamed. Just think you're a bit wacko...

First of all drop the "old people" and use the word senior(s), you are only as old as you feel.
And as for butterscotch: I personality like the way it glues my dentures together but not as well as a sugar daddy. LOL

Butterscotch is a type of confectionery made by boiling sugar syrup, butter, cream, and vanilla. In many ways the ingredients for butterscotch are similar to toffee; the major difference is that the sugar is boiled to the soft crack stage for butterscotch and the hard crack stage for toffee.

This hard candy was easy to make & when the old folks were not always able to buy candy (only on special occasions), they were able to make their own butterscotch. It probably brings back memories of family gatherings and comfort.

Take an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk. Peel off the label. Put it on its **side** wholly immersed in a big pot of water. Heat to boiling then very gently boil for 1-3 hours depending on how stiff you like the product. The can must remain immersed at all times **on its side.** Cool thereafter.

It's called the Maillard reaction. The product is pretty good stuff. Eat it a little bit at a time on the tip of teaspoon, or warm it to get it loose and top vanilla ice cream. YUM!

OTOH, if you want to have a really good dessert... French vanilla ice cream and a jigger of Laphroaig poured over just before eating. That is as fine as it gets short of creme brulet.

I do like Butterscotch, but not half as much as I like Peanut Butter! Is this really more common among older people? I had no idea that liking butterscotch was old-fashioned.

Ah, the eternal generalizer! All old people, I am sure, do not like butterscotch. I, on the other hand, have loved the stuff since I was a kid, so I suppose that I like it for legit reasons.

I'm old enough to qualify for Social Security, but not old enough to like butterscotch (yet?). I can't stand the stuff.

As we get older, various parts of our body wear out, so for example older people might not have any natural teeth left.

We can suck on butterscotch, get good value, not need to use teeth (if have any).

Because back in the old days chocolate was not as mass produced. Most candy stores in the early 1900's only had these terrible hard candies.
