Could this happen? Would a no trespassing sign work? She has inlisted the help of the other nosiy body relatives that have nothing better to do then to make my life h#ll. So I really want to grow more cactus just to make a point. Never thought about being sued over a few plants though, anyone know the law and suggestions on ways to cover myself.

You have a clear path to the door, the plants are along a path in my front yard with plenty of room to go around. I think I will put up this just to be careful

First its on your personal property therefore they would be trespassing. Now for people allowed in your yard simple put up a sign informing what type of cactus it is , like you see in botanical gardens and a small warning .That way you can grow a garden full of cacti and have that warning in a tasteful and educational display. That should piss them of royally.

you *could* get sued but it seems unlikely. is the cactus in such a location that the mailman or a door to door salesman is likely to contact it?

I don't think you can get sued for it. I think your mother in law is trying to brain wash you into pulling it out since she doesn't like it.
