piggy represented the sanity and civilization of the book. his death represented the boys finally becoming barbaric. simon was the hero, or christ figure, if looking at it from a religious perspective. his death represented christ's death for the sinners, or the hero dying to save the others.

Soldiers brainwashed into killing former friends or family because they're regarded as dissenters against their leader. They were Nazi-like executions. The "monster" represents a symbol of the evil enemy that everybody needs to be afraid of.
Monster = Communism or Terrorism

and if you recall, when the narrator is describing Simon as he drifted away, that Simon was displayed as Jesus is on the cross.
