Can someone explain what happened at the end of the movie Pleasentville?

When it is back in pleasentville when the final song is playing, toby's mom is on the bench talking with her husband. they say stuff like, i don't know what to do now. then all of a sudden the husband changes to the diner owner. can someone explain this to me?
