Hmm.

x^2 + 144 = 0
So

x^2 = -144

x = sqrt(-144)

x = 12i (where "i" is the imaginary number where i^2=-1)

x^2 + 144 = 0

x = ± 12i

12i² = -144

-144 + 144 = 0

x^2 + 144 = 0

x = ± 12i

12i² = -144

-144 + 144 = 0

so...
2x+144=0
-144 (you need to move 144 to the other side because you cannot have a real number and a variable on the same side...to move144 to the other side you subtract it from both sides and therefore canceling it from the left side resulting in
-144 on the opposing side)
------------------
2x= -144 (now divide 2 on both side so it cancels out the 2 on the left and -144 divided by 2 is -72 )
so....
x= -72

check: -72 x 2= -144

hope this helps =)

10 points? Really? Everyone else only gives 8.

x^2 + 144 = 0
x^2 = -144
x = square root(-144) = 12 i

x²+144=0
x²=-144
x=±12 i

(12i)²+144=0
-144+144=0
0=0

(-12i)²+144=0
-144+144=0
0=0

12 * 12 = 144
check
x^2 + 144 = 0
- 144 - 144
x^2 = -144
square root both (DONT KNOW SYMBOL)
X = 12i (i=imaginary number)

this quadratic does not have real roots, the roots are 12i and -12i where i=sqrt(-1)

substitute 12i, 144i^2+144=-144+144=0
for -12i, (-12i)(-12i)+144=144i^2+144=-144+144=0

x^2 + 144 = 0
x^2 = -144
x = +/- sqrt(-144)
x = +/- 12sqrt(-1)
x = +/- 12i

x^2+144=0
x^2+144-144 = 0-144
x^2 = -144
Apply Square root on both sides.
Sqrt(x^2)=Sqrt(-144)
Sqrt(x^2)=Sqrt(144*-1)
Sqrt(x^2)=Sqrt(144*i^2)
x=12i
The answer is 12i.
