Since Charlamagne was crowned prior to the Crusades and I see no evidence that he warred with followers of Islam, I'm uncertain how there would be any reaction. Charlamagne was crowned just 200 years after Mohammed was born--thus not even 2 centuries after Islam was founded. Even though Islam spread throughout the mideast and northern Africa like wildfire, I can't see a convergence.

"Charlemagne even had contact with the caliphal court in Baghdad. In 797 (or possibly 801), the caliph of Baghdad, Harun al-Rashid, presented Charlemagne with an Asian elephant named Abul-Abbas and a mechanical clock, out of which came a mechanical bird to announce the hours."
