Sure they did. They had the turnstiles at the cliff edge closed once they had driven their quota over them. Of course, they only used spears.

Buffalo herds numbered as high as 15 million until the late 1890's. They are docile animals and were easy pray for hunters who killed them by the thousands just for the sport.

Also, Westward expansion of the US reduced there feeding grounds further reducing there numbers.

Then, white people came with guns, and hunted far too many.

Bison were hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century and were reduced to very small numbers by the mid-1880s. One major cause was a government initiative to curtail the population of the Plains Indian by killing off their main food source--the bison.

Beacuse people like to hunt them and hang them on the wall as trophies.
