Given that it's a hex I would limit it to 4-5 male guppies. You can also consider sparkling gourami, croaking gourami and a few of the smallest tetras, such as neons and glowlights. A pair of either type of gourami from above could be kept with 2-3 pygmy cory cats easily, but not with the tetras, keep a group of about 5 tetras and that would be the limit really.

I love puffer fish in hex tanks. They spend the day going up and down. There is the Indian Dwarf Pufferfish that is small enough to put a few in a 5 gallon hex. If you ever get a larger hex you could get some larger puffers though I recommend you give these a try, I think you'll love them.

Killifish Take a look at the Chicago Killifish Association or American Killifish Association and choose a nice pair for your tiny hex.

They recently discovered a barb called gallaxy that is really small and beautiful.

All male endler's livebearers that look like wild guppys would do fine in that tank though if you add a female they will over populate the tank in no time.

There aren't very many fish that will live in such a small tank that due to it's shape have even a smaller surface area than a regular 5 gallon though the suggestions above would be nice.

Generally the rule-of-thumb is 2inches of fish per gallon. And since guppies tend to be around 2-2.5 inches, you could have a small school of 4-5 guppies. The problem with a hex is that guppies tend to be top layer fish (they live naturally towards the top of the tank) and in a hex, there is less top space.

My suggestion though is one male or one female betta (not both). Bettas are friendly "people" fish with their own personalities. If you're looking for flashy, get a male. At almost any pet store, you can get veiltailed bettas which come in all colors and have long finnage. They are also very easy to care for as they generally do well at the same temperature as you keep your house (if it's not much less than 70 degrees). Also they don't require a filter and I've found that they don't even like the filter sometimes. They aren't messy like goldfish. And they tend to be curious and like lots of plants and caves in their tank.

Good luck!

A 5 gallon hex is more limiting than a conventional 5 gallon because it is deep and has a smaller surface area.
I wouldn't consider guppies in it. The only thing I would consider is a single male betta. For that, it is great. For more, it would be a problem. Could you get away with one male and two female guppies, probably, but still not a great situation for that many fish in such a small tank.
Sorry I can't give more interesting choices, only practical ones.

Get ONE betta. They're beautiful and among the easiest fish to keep.

You have to make sure the water is properly prepared before adding it and that it doesn't get too dirty, but I think your best bet will be a betta. They can live 2-3 years.

3 guppies, or 1 male betta would be great!

You could probably fit three guppies. Tetras are really good too.
