First of all, the first year I tried out, I didn't make it...but I messed up HORRIBLY in the song. The second year I made a townsperson and next october are the auditions for Once On This Island Jr. I really want to make a major role, and for some reason I feel like I sing really good when I sing to myself and my friends, but even when I videotaped a performance for the teacher who is also in lead of the managing the play I felt shakey and didn't do as good, so what should I do?? If you could give me some background on the play that would be nice thanks =]

Here's a synopsis:
Taking place on a Caribbean island divided by social prejudice, ‘Once On This Island’ is a calypso-flavored re-telling of the traditional “Little Mermaid” tale. The show revolves around Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl, who falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. Various gods control the peasants’ lives including the god of Love, (Erzulie) Earth (Asaka), Water (Agwe), and Death (Papa Ge). The show focuses on the effects social class divisions have on love.

The show is like Les Miz in that it's mostly sung, not really any spoken dialogue. Look up a song called "Waiting For Life" It's my daughter's favorite and it's sung by Ti Moune. In fact, your local library may have the soundtrack or be able to get it on request.

The best thing to get over your nerves is to sing as often as you can in front of people. Good or bad, sing with confidence and attitude for anyone who will listen! Even the cat! Sing for your family, sing around the house and don't care who hears you... sing for your friends... anyone! If this show is not until the next school year then try to do a show over the summer to get yourself back on stage. Look to local theatres. Go to backstage.com and do a casting search for your area. You have to pay to get all of the info, but the initial search is free and you may be able to see enough info to find out the rest on your own without paying by looking up the theatre's own website. You can do it!

Good luck!

I auditioned for Urleen about three months ago in my High School from the musical Footloose and I really enjoyed it. When I auditioned, we had individual auditions and group auditions. I was nervous but when I got up there, I realized that I can either give it my all and have enough confidence and just shine and atleast try or be nervous, freak out and either not make it and regret it later or get a part that I didn't want.
Just go for it and remember that you are doing it for yourself and just have fun. Dont be nervous and here are some tips.
1) Never look at your judges when you are auditioning.
2) Never tell your judges things like
"Oh I hope you liked it" or "How did I do?" or anything.
3) Introduce yourself and just be you're best and shine and I'm sure that you will do fantastic.
GOOD LUCK!! or better yet BREAK A LEG!!

OMG once on this island? i don't know about the jr bit, but i just did the full one...it was great. except, i go to an all-girls school, so we had four goddesses instead of two gods and two goddesses. i was the goddess of water, agwe, which was exciting because im only a freshmen and i got the part over several seniors.

warning: the entire show is singing. like, the ENTIRE show. there is maybe...one or two pages of dialogue in the whole thing. so i hope you like to sing...a lot. and also, i hope you like to dance. the first song is called We Dance, and 90% of the show is dancing. but you can fudge through it if you want, and the jr version is probably a lot less intense.

THE PARTS:
Ti Moune; female lead, second/first soprano, lotsa singing, two songs plus a lot of lines in other songs.
Daniel; male lead, i dont know what range he is, ti moune falls in love with him. he has a song.
Mama Euralie: foster mother of Ti Moune, alto, has an amazing song with Ton Ton and Ti Moune, very sweet.
Ton Ton Julian; foster father of Ti Moune, shares song with Mama, fun character.
Armand: i dont even know if you'll do his song. he doesn't really sing a lot, he's part of the history of the island.
Asaka: goddess of earth, MUST be able to belt, goes kinda high...either a high F or a high A#, i can't remember. she has the highest-energy song in the show.
Erzulie: this character is my favorite. she's the goddess of love, and has a beautiful song called part of the human heart. second soprano, soft song, not much belting..just one line sorta.
Agwe: god of water, has a fun song called rain.
Papa Ge: god of death- comes in a wrecks Ti Moune's life, basically. actually...he kinda started it all...but anyway, he sings a song with Ti Moune and it's really, really, REALLY intense. i love it.
Andrea: small part, but basically the bitchy girl who steals Daniel from Ti Moune. she has a fun little songlet.

yeah, that's the whole cast, i think. we added an ensemble, but you really don't need one. the songs are extremely diverse, depending on what part you want, you can sing basically any song that fits you. email me if you'd like, i'd love to help.

=] i hope this helped.

Keep singing and work in front of an audience.

Try joining a local drama group and also at a church play.

Practice makes perfect and when you down the same road it all becomes familiar and comfortable.

And remember she can't eat you. Also talk to her about your scariness she may have some ideas that will help you cope with your stage fright.

Mazal Tov I hope this will help.

Just imagine your're singing for one special friend. A friend who will love you no matter what. Practice a little bit a head of time and have a glass of water. Just relax and have confidence.
