Kevin, try shutting down and disconnect the mouse and then connect it again and power on. There doesn't seem to be a reason that computer doesn't recognize it; USB is the best way of connecting any thing in Win XP.good luck

Some ps/2 interface devices, more commonly mice, cannot be used with a usb-ps/2 adapter. Vista might not have the ability to communicate with the ps/2 mouse driver using the usb port.
try a usb mouse.

Get rid of vista. It's a microsoft paranoid operating system. Go back to XP if you had no problems at all, then your USB hardware will work. OR, best of all, get Ubuntu linux, from ubuntu.com. it's free and you don't need a license key to use it.
Vista is full of crap and limitations. It's DRM-based. You don't want disabled hardware.

If it is not recognized by your computer, you may need to download specific software for your mouse off of the web. I would recomend visiting the help site for the company that manufacture your mouse and downloading that software, then install the software and reboot your computer. Good luck!
