My first thought would be the Mad Max trilogy (sans the third installment, in my opinion), as you can see above. Other than that, I would say films like On the Beach, Dr. Strangelove, Fail-Safe (despite its impeccable resemblance to Strangelove), the Planet of the Apes series, The Omega Man, THX-1138, Escape from New York, Blade Runner... Some people mentioned Akira, and I'm reminded of Cowboy Bebop, which also takes place in a universe where Earth has been wiped out, although the future there is more upbeat.

There are plenty to choose from, depending on what genre you're looking for. You can even consider many zombie movies to be apocalyptic.

...in my opinion, one of the most interesting and underappreciated post-apocalyptic film to come down the cinematic pipeline, is a little sci-fi/action/comedy ditty entitled "Six String Samurai" (1998).

An eclectic film, to say the least, "SSS" depicts a heavily nuked USA, wrought with decrepit Russian rule, and strewn with some of the most bizarre characters set to celluloid.

A lone wandering bespectacled warrior...and a devoted '50's rocker, wanders the contaminated wasteland, armed with a guitar in one hand, and a samurai sword in the other; his goal...to trek across the desert wasteland, in seach of the legendary Lost Vegas, and assume the secession of rule presently held by a post-mortem Elvis imitator. Along the way, the warrior takes in a wayward orphan...but still has to endure a gauntlet of hellish, bloodthirsty scavengers along the way...

To say that this film is unusual, is a definite understatement; it is a most bizarre take on the 'post-apocalyptic world' genere, and most satisfying. It is fresh, and a far cry from the more recognized and run-of-the-mill cinematic takes on this genre; most highly recommended!!!

Originally distributed on VHS, then on DVD by Island Entertainment, the film has recently been picked up for DVD re-release, by Anchor Bay Entertainment.

"The Road Warrior" is my favorite. It has a lot of great driving action and stars a young Mel Gibson. The film has a prequel called "Mad Max" and a sequel called "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," but, in my opinion, this was the best of the three. I hope you enjoy it!
