1 Wireless Range Extender

1 High Gain Omni Directional Antenna

1 Wireless Network Adapter for every computer you want to connect wirelessly

Setup the router in one home, if you plan on sharing a internet connection then set it up in the home with the broadband connection.
Connect the high gain antenna to the router and place it on the wall closest to the neighbors home.
Mount the range extender in the neighbors home on a wall closest to the wall you mounted the antenna on in your home.
Set the router and range extender up as per the install instructions and thats it.

Basically, what the previous answerer said, a wireless router and a network cable to connect your computer to the router (because your original cable will be in use connecting the modem to the router). If the house is only 40 feet away, and you place the router on the side of your house facing this second house, then the areas in the second house should be sufficiently covered by it (except for maybe a few spots).
If you don't want to have all the computers need new wireless cards, there's another option. You can use "DD-WRT" (google it, lots of info on web) on a second router in the second house and have it wirelessly connect to the first house's router. Then anyone wired to this second router can get internet through just one wireless link between the houses. (This is probably easiest if you just wish to link two home networks, not create one WLAN that covered a large area like 2 homes.)

I know everyone seems to think Linksys and Dlink are the best but there are far better and higher power units that are available and cover much larger areas with better signals.
For 40 feet even from inside the normal house use a 250-400mw Access point connected to your current router. Your done.
Like
AIP-W610H Indoor 802.11b/g 400mW High-Power AP/ Client/ WISP/ Bridge/ Repeater
http://www.echotechwireless.com/AIP_W610H_Indoor_802_11b_g_400mW_High_Power_AP_Cl_p/aip-w610h.htm
or an
ENGENIUS/SENAO ECB/NCB-3220
http://www.echotechwireless.com/ACCESS_POINT_CLIENT_BRIDGE_802_11b_g_400mW_p/ncb-3220.htm
I use them and have coverage in and around the house for about 250-400 feet (all depends on which side of the house I am on.
A nice high power bridge on the other end makes it a solid connection if that were needed but in most cases normal cards work find on the client side.

Would be much easier to run a cable the 40 feet, but if you must go wireless, you will need to purchase a wireless range booster or extender.

you need a modem, an ISP contract ( SBC DSL, comcast), a wireless router (recommend Linksys), a adapter for each computer, a power source, a firewall for each computer, anti-virus,and yeah
