Yesterday I asked the question what should I have written on my 21 yr old son's birthday cake and someone answered "Don't you think he's a bit too old for a birthday cake" well, you are never too old to feel special and I personally think it is great to buy a cake. What are your thoughts on this? His g/f agrees with the answerer... she was with me when I ordered his birthday cake... she is also upset I am letting him have friends over this weekend and cook out. What is wrong with that? I love making my kids feel special. I did not have birthday parties when I was younger at all.

Usually I make a cake yes, but his g/f took such a cute picture of my son a few monts ago, so I had to have it put on this special cake just for him. I think he will get a kick out of the photo cake and a kick out of the saying... time to move out! LOL I am excited about this

A birthday is a perfect excuse to have your cake and eat it too. My kids are substantially younger (3 and 5), but I did order a cake for my dad's 61st birthday and put a "16" candle on it. Everyone deserves to feel special on their birthday. "Happy Birthday John" is the simplest and most perfect thing to write on a birthday cake (for someone named John). Just substitute the birthday person's name, and there you go. I think it's great that you want your kids to feel special.

I think going to the bakery and getting a cake decorated with your son's name on it when he is 21 is a bit childish. But that doesn't mean you have to stop having a birthday cake. All that you are trying to do is show that you care. A plain cake does the same thing. Having some friends over, eating together and enjoying some cake is a wonderful way of doing that.
Ask the girlfriend to help plan the cookout, she can even invite some friends of her own and she'll jump right on the bandwagon.

First, you have to realize that this is not your son's fault and bi-polar is a disease that runs/ruins someones life. He needs treatment and not just meds. You can drug him into submission but that will not be the answer, he will feel better and go off the meds and then be right back where you started. Treatment centers are good, but not enough and 4 or 5 days aren't even long enough to get him stabilized on the meds. That can take up to a month to figure out the right dosage and most bi-polar meds were never tested on children, only adults so its very tricky to get that figured out. Second, take the TV out of his room, although he does have a legit excuse for a lot of his behavior, he still needs to learn about consequences. Third, all siblings fight, he may be a Little worse because of he is bi-polar. Remember, it is very hard to control the ups and downs and extremes of bi-polar. (Remember when Brittney Spears lost her mind) They can not control these things. Forth, Absolutely you need to celebrate his birthday! Otherwise you are basically telling him & showing you don't care. ANd fifth and finally... Hang in there. I know its tough.

I didn't have birthday parties at all either, and I get very excited about birthday cakes and whatnot. I helped someone get a birthday cake for her 30-something fiance, if that tells you anything about age appropriateness in my book.... :) And...I know of a 70-something gentleman who also enjoys specially made birthday cakes. It's great to have something special to symbolize a time in your life that you feel like sharing with others. Sure, there are other ways, but cakes are so sweet and fun to do.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I have always baked a cake for my husband for his birthday, and he is 25. It's the little things like this that people remember. I can't tell you what I got my for 21st birthday, but my Mom baked me a cake. It never failed every year she would bake my favorite cake, and I treasure those memories. I do not have my mother with me anymore. I don't see why his g/f would be so upset she should want to do something special for him.

I agree with you, although my birthday was last month and I didn't get a cake from anyone. But I did get flowers, a "birthday girl" balloon, and a seafood dinner out. That was very good...And age is not a factor....you see.....I just turned 63...Wow! This is a great question and deserves a star. Have a great day and keep on doing the birthday thing for your kids.....♥ Forgot to say, it's chocolate all the way, with some ice cream on the side too. ♥

I definitely think that you're never too old to have a birthday cake...In my family we celebrate everyone's bday with a cake. I'm 21 and we had cake for my 21st birthday. Don't listen to any of them. And I think it's nice that you want to have his friends over for a cookout and cake. You go girl. Don't let anyone tell you that you shouldn't do something, unless it's illegal!

Nothing at all wrong with that. My siblings and I are all grown up, but we bake or buy each other cakes on birthdays. As long as you and your son enjoy celebrating, don't worry about other people. Anyway, it's his 21st. Everyone should have a cake for that birthday

I'm in my early thirties with an older brother and our mother still has family "parties" for us complete with cake and streamers.
I think it is fabulous and will always do such for my kids.
Why would you let this day go by when you can show someone who means so much to you how special they are? Just a simple day that you can remind them that they are worth the extra effort.
Bravo good mommy!
The nay-sayers just don't want to go through the trouble themselves. You keep on showing them out! hehe!

What's a birthday without a cake? Without a cake with my friends and family there I would feel lonely. which no one should feel on a birthday. People need to feel special on their birthday, come on it only comes once a year.
