U.S. Patent 6,084,285 describes a "lateral flux capacitor having fractal-shaped perimeters." The idea being to make a capacitor in an integrated circuit, some of whose capacitance exists between two conductors on a single layer (hence, "lateral"). The device is not a lateral flux-capacitor but a lateral-flux capacitor; that is, lateral modifies flux, and lateral flux is attributive, rather than flux capacitor compound and lateral modifying capacitor.

In fiction, we call the flux capacitor an example of "deus ex machina" or the God Machine. The creators of Back to the Future needed a device that would solve the temporal mechanics of time travel, so they made this invention up that magically solves all the problems associated with time travel.

First, go up to they guy who told you that and kick him in the jimmy.
Next, watch the Back to the Future movies. Get some popcorn and soda, make a night of it.
See that flashy lightbox behind the driver's right shoulder in the Delorean/time machine? That's the flux capacitor. It makes time travel possible.

way back in the "scientifiction" pulp magazine days, there were several stories of time travel, which rode a ":timeflux:" or some form. the flux term was used as a time energy or motion measurment. hence when you need to travel thru time you need a fuel tank or capacitor to store it in for use."flux capacitor" is a hypothetical device for storing temporal energies. kind of like the "ansible" which allows instant communication from different star systems but only for time travel
