Harvey Haddix pitched 12 & 2/3 perfect innings for the Pirates against the Braves on May 26, 1959, only to lose the game 1-0

Yeah, as stated, Haddix in 1959, for the Pirates against the Braves. Check out the box score: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1959/B05260MLN1959.htm

He was perfect for 12 innings. Opening the bottom of the 13th, Mantilla reached on an error (there goes the perfecto), Mathews (yep, HOFer, 512 home runs Eddie Mathews) sac bunted Mantilla to second, Aaron was intentionally walked, and then -- here's where it gets weird, and the play-by-play doesn't do it justice -- Adcock homered, but while circling the bases, Aaron saw that Mantilla had scored and, figuring the game was over, abandoned the basepaths (headed for the dugout) after rounding second. Adcock kept on going, but was called out for passing Aaron and so credited with a double. So only Mantilla scored, final Braves 1 - Pirates 0, and Haddix, despite probably the greatest single game pitching performance in major league history, walked away with the L, and no official perfect game.

Baseball is funny that way, sometimes.

PS. Braves pitcher Lew Burdette went the distance on the other side, throwing a 13-inning shutout, allowing 12 hits (all singles, one by Haddix), zero walks, and ringing up two strikeouts.

Harvey Haddix retired 36 consecutive batters in 12 innings, but his Pittsburgh teammates didn't score, as Braves pitcher Lew Burdette was also pitching a shutout. After an error by Don Hoak ended the perfect game, the runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, followed by an intentional walk to Hank Aaron. Joe Adcock then hit a home run, ending the perfect game.
