Most Americans are fat because of we live in a country of excess, this is typified by Las Vegas (the city in which I reside). The American diet has much higher calories and are unhealthier when compared to those of, say, Europe or Asia. No where else in the world can you get a nice 16 oz steak and enjoy it... why do you think French food are served in smaller portions, because you eat until you're content, not full.

America has the most fat/obese people in the world, were the #1 fatties, I am not fat but I bet I can get fat pretty soon if I wanted too. But you have to look at it like this, why can't we just give some of our food to the actual STARVING countries? We have all of the cows and vegetations, so why can't South Korea and Africa eat a meal that doesn't consist of diseased cows? If America shared food, though we give food and donate, we should start a new program for food so we can distribute it evenly to other countries, maybe the American family should only be able to consume a certain amount of food per year/month. But to answer you Americans are fat because our food is SO plentiful that we can throw a good plate of food in the garbage and still claim to be only wasting a "little bit of food" just think about it, that little bit of food we waste and eat can be a feast to someone in another country, and this is why we are fat and almost everyone country calls us fat and greedy.

Well the reason why most Americans are fat is because America is the "leader" in trends around the world. Now this fat trend has also started to pass on to other countries as well. England now has almost as many overweight people as America, and the rest of Europe is following suit. Even Chinese people are starting to get fat. This is not just America's problem. I would say this "fat" problem has a lot to do with technology doing everything for us, so we arent moving as much. Also, people in first world countries are so busy making money that they dont have time to make healthy foods so they opt for processed and fast foods instead. Advertisers have also discovered that children will listen to them and persuade their parents to buy junk food for them.

It is just a crisis that every developed country in the world is beginning to face, and there really is no clear answer on how to fix it.

Because America is convinced that bigger is better, when it's not. And food is in our face 24/7 count how many time you see a food advertisment within the 30 minutes of the show your watching and plus the most unhealthy food is cheaper, so you really think someone is gonna pay afew dollars on a pack of apples or salad, or a dooolar for a burger. you do the math.Understand? Good Luck! :)

Robert C said:

"If capitalism controls the diet of people...and capitalism doesn't care about people...what do you think happens?

The American dream has wrought its revenge on the American people...it is no more complicated than that!

America is the only country in the world where its poorest people are its fattest....think about it...."

----EXACTLY! Talk about hitting the nail on the head!

However, we must not forget that there are indeed people in this country who are so impoverished that they can't even afford the cheap junk that clever capitalist marketing spews. I can't understand the logic of the person who said that there are no starving people here. Must be the gross generalization that everyone here has a bounty of opportunities to choose from.

Someone mentioned minimum wage. Great point.
Such is what capitalism does: It keeps us poor, unhealthy, and overworked so that we'll literally be too sick and tired to question unfairness, injustice, and the lies that are spoon-fed to us on a daily basis.

High fructose corn syrup sweetner in many things is not very digestable and tends to add fat when consumed. Some Americans have very inactive lifestyles and prefer to drive everywhere rather than walk or bike. We eat lots of fattening foods and eat a little too much frequently. We eat lots of processed foods that are high in calories.

Why do the British have awful teeth?

That's exactly what this sounds like to an American.

A lot of American's are fat, just as a lot of French people are asses, a lot of British have bad teeth.

Stereotypes about any country will never end.

Because they shovel so much junk down their necks, why do you think Britain is so rapidly catching up? Because we have a fair few of their fast food joints! And they shovel it down with gusto here too! Must admit though, in a miserable, depressed, broken down country such as Britain, we need more comfort than ever and the american fast food which is great tasting junk provides it wonderfully!

This is only a private opinion, but I think that it's the result of ecological catastrophe inflicted by white settlers unaccustomed to the peculiarities of American soil.

As consequence, the soil now gives less nutrients and people feel the need to eat more to fulfill their quota.

Portions of food greatly increased as compared to our parent's age of the 50's. More entertainment these days that require little or no engery, which makes it more appealing. (e.g. tv, video games, the computer your fat-self is sitting at while reading this)
