Congratulations on getting into one of the biggest blue chips in Scotland
Call up the RBOS HR department and ask them. As a condition of your provisional employment they will have asked your permission (I HOPE!) to perform these checks, so you in turn have a right to know what it is they want to know and why. (I think this relates to the Data Protection Act, which allows you to challenge any incorrect or corrupted information held in a company's files)
Typically, for a bank or building society in the UK, they will at least want to know
- If you have any past criminal activity
- Credit check
- Reference checks for the past x-years (just in case you've lied on your application form)
These checks are done to determine the risk you would pose to the bank, if you were say a criminal mastermind in search of privileged customer information to sell onto the black-market. (Though I'm sure I heard on Watchdog that they provide easy access to this in any case)
The provisional period allows management and the HR department time to determine:
- How quickly you take to the training
- If you are a team player
- Also to see if you can handle the varying pressures of the job.
It also allows them to perform more detailed checks (where they need to)

The process will vary from employer to employer, but at my own job, after a provisional offer, we will verify all of an applicant's work history through direct contact with each previous employer, we verify any degrees conferred after high school, we contact all personal references to get a better idea of an applicant as a person, and, last but not least, we check an applicant's credit history and run a criminal background check. I work in mid-management for a financial services company, and let me assure you that your credit history and and work history will be deal-breakers if either one causes anyone to question your integrity.
Depending on what kind of workload the h.r. staffers at RBS have, expect this to take at least a couple of weeks. Hope this helps. Oh, and Steve B. is correct. In my office, we definitely will check any professional certifications and endorsements. Whether those sorts of items would be verified for, say, a teller, I'd say it's less likely, but it's still one more item for consideration regardless.

Yep - it's a Bank, so they have to check the following :-
1) Identity check - that you are who you say you are.
2) References - including contacting your previous Employers and checking that a) you really did work there on the dates given and b) you really did hold the positions claimed
3) Credit Check - to ensure you (and anyone living with you) are financially 'secure' (i.e. not so desperate for money that you are going to embezzle funds from the Bank or sell access codes or Customer details to criminals.
4) Depending on the seniority of the position - a CRO Check - that you have no criminal convictions that might suggest any lack of honesty (speeding etc. is OK, shop lifting is not).
5) They MIGHT (or might not) check your certificated qualifications.
