Does slavery effect Americans as a whole? If so why, If not why not?

I am doing a research paper on the mental effect of slavery in today's society. I just would like to know do you think that there is a mental effect from slavery. Why or why not.

I think the only americans that are mentally affected by our history of slavery are those who insist for some reason on dragging such baggage around and wailing about it incessantly. The rest of us do our best to ignore such dysfunctional and ultimately childish behavior.
