"Lovely Bones" is written from the point of view of a murdered 14 year old girl but it's not a mystery, just a great book.

FANTASY: I'm a fan of robin hobb, who did the amazing farseer trilogy about a man taught to be an assassin, and also terry goodkind's books, about a man and a woman in a magical world. the first in that series is called "the stone of tears"

ROMANTIC SCI-FI/FANTASY: Sharon Shinn's Samaria series are awesome, about genetic angels ruling over the humans in a planet where they are a superior race.Juliet Marillier's books, with the bes called Daughter of the Forest are more historical fantasy's based in celtic times, but with magic and a gorgeous, slow romance.

CLASSIC MUST READ'S: everybody should definatly try to read A Clockwork Orange, which is difficult to get into but worth it. It's set in a future, with the amoral leader of a gang. It's pretty shocking and disturbing, but really gripping. Also the classic Gone with the Wind, is a must read!

if you like more realistic non-fictional books, the godfather by Mario Puzo, Donnie Brasco's autobiography are good

HORROR/THRILLER: there is only Stephen King! Personally, the best is The Shining, about a family trapped in an isolated - so much better than the film!

Hi i have just finished reading a book by kathy O'beirn called Don't Ever Tell. As u can porbably gather is about the childhood of the auther, its heartwrenchngly sad and made me cry a few times, but is a good book and i admire her passion for wanting justice for a childhood that was runined not only by her father but by people in authority too.

Above all is a good book, and i didnt want to put it down.

*{possible plot spoilers}*

I would have to recommend a novel by Crockett Johnson, titled "Harold and the Purple Crayon." It's a real page turner, one about a young man who seeks to create his own epic adventure, finding his way through city and country, to find where he belongs in this world. Truly a classic, very inspiring for our times.

But, If you're more into a thriller/mystery novel, I would recommend "Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Suess. It is a gripping novel of two youngsters who stumble over horror upon horror after being abandoned by their parents in a haunted house. As they begin to lose their hope and their minds, they cross paths with a black cat; he is as equally dark as the magic he preforms on the children. Mystery unfolds as strange occurrences in the house are really not as strange as they seems when Cat is around. Later in the book -and even the series- (although I don't want to spoil it), Cat forces the children into brutal labour. Through a heroic feat, the brother is able to rescue his sister and vanquish the villain. All ends heartwarming when a foster mother adopts the boy and girl, bringing new beginnings to their new family.

I hope you enjoy the reads I much as I have this year. They are on my "re-read" list for the summer. (:

Try Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. It's six stories about six different characters living through six different points in time. It starts in the 1800's and works it's way towards a post apocalyptic future. It manages to blend several different genres and themes and multiple characters into one novel. As the book progresses the stories intermingle until they become one story, it really is a good book and I do it no justice trying to explain it.

I'm reading Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell.
It's a series of different stories, set in different periods of history, but there is a link between all of the characters. It is very good. Also there are lots of websites where you can swap books with other readers, if you don't want to keep buying books - all you have to pay is the postage.

I know some things to be true by Wally Lamb. Absolutely amazing book about two brothers, one of who is schizophrenic. A real page turner. Couldn't put it down. Also agree that the Lovely Bones is a great read although it sounds horrible.

Well, I'm really into Nicci French & Minette Walters books, they are thrillers and I find that the characters are believable, along with good suspense in the plot.
MW wrote 'The Sculptress' which was made into a tv series with Pauline Quirk, I believe.
'The shape of serpents' was an eye opener.
NF - 'Killing me softly' - made into a film
Basically I like all of what I've read by them...

*Coralee333! I read that book too, AWESOME!*

White Swans - set in China (under Chairman Mau's regime) it tells the story of 3 generations of chinese women and their struggles in life under the most awful conditions. I found it incredibly moving, inspiring and a fantastic history lesson too. Definately one of my best reads. Somebody recommended the 'lovely bones' - this is a wonderful book, but one which i would never want to read again as it disturbed me so much.

Try "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. It is apparently a ghost story (in my opinion the best one ever written)... The best of all is that at the end YOU should decide which is the truth. There are at least two hypotheses about the strange happenings in an English mansion...
