Deep question....
We as humans focus too much on what makes us different than what makes us alike, i.e part of the same human family.
You couple that with ignorance and I think you have a great start to a very deep examination of your question.

Only really primitive societies without conflict had no word for hate. Greed, lust, religion, competition, ethnicity...are just a few of the reasons why it exists.
