Wander into a bookstore and take a look around. Even grocery stores and drug stores have books these days. Read the covers. Just find something that peaks your interest and dig in.
In my town we also have a wonderful used book store.
And, don't be afraid to ask the clerks. Someone always has an opinion.
At the moment, I'm glancing at a pile of books and wondering if I should pick one up, continue to blather away on Yahoo, or actually do some of my own writing.
Once you start you won't want to stop!!! Books are wonderful friends -- you'll never be alone again.

If you're not much of a reader, you should start with books on subjects you KNOW you like. Think about what movies or TV shows you like; do you like the Sopranos? Then you might like to read The Godfather. Do you like crime dramas, like CSI? Well, you would like pretty much anything by Kellerman, or other thriller/mystery writers. Comedies? There are plenty of light frothy summer reads on the best seller list right now. Or you can read the original books of movies you like, and see if all those people who say "The book was better" are really right. Personally, I think the books Rebecca, Gone with the Wind and The Godfather were better, the movie The Shining was better, and the Lord of the Rings was a toss up.
Good luck with it; reading is so much fun, and you can really learn alot about the world from a chair in your own backyard.

Well, it all depends on the type of person you are. Are you a guy or a girl? Are you an adult, teenager, tween, or kid? Are you an adrenaline freak, or more of a laid-back person?
Here are some of my personal favorite books:
"The Dragon Keeper Chronicles" by Donita K. Paul: Good for any age and gender, really. Good for people who like fantasy.
"House" by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker: This book'll get the adrenaline flowing! I stayed up 'til midnight reading it, and then I dreamt of it when I went to sleep. Creepy and cool!
"The Circle Trilogy" by Ted Dekker: More great thrillers. A futuristic/sci-fi/fantasy. I just finished the last book in the series (White), and loved it.
I could go on for hours, but I only have 1 hour so I'll quit here. Just go to your local library and search the catalog for a while. Talk to your librarian. You'll find what you need.
Good luck!

I second the Charlie Huston recommendation. I'm reading Already Dead at the moment, great read so far.
For light reading, you should try the Stephanie Plum series, by Janet Evanovich. First book is One For the Money, it's hilarious, and the others are just as good. Great beach or pool reading.

Laurie Notaro wrote a series of books about her ups and downs from college to married life. Funniest books I have ever read, I can't recommend those enough.
Here's a link to the first one...

Good luck, hope this helps!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower... though perhaps I should ask your age first... It is a rated R novel, for content :)
But it is really a great novel.
Oranges are Not the Only Fruit
If you want something fun and light, the Narnia series is good for all ages.
Stephen King if you are up for a "horror"

i loved the kite runner. it is about a boy in Afghanistan when it started going bad. truly a great story full of drama and twists.
I also recommend the lovely bones about a girl who is murdered looking down on her family over the years as they try to heal from losing her. haunting book that kept me up at night reading and being scared.

I've been really into Charlie Huston as of late. He write pulp noir, very addicting. If not him, maybe some Augusten Burroughs or perhaps Armistead Maupin?
