i have been there several times and have never even seen or heard of anyone seeing a shark (except for at the aquarium!)-i definitely wouldn't worry about that. however, watch out for jellyfish-they are pretty abundant on the shoreline, you don't want to get a sting from one!

Any beach in the US is going to have sharks nearby. Are the sharks looking to eat you? No. They have a completely different idea of what food should look and taste like. There have only been a few hundred shark attacks recorded in the last one hundred years. It is actually pretty rare to be attacked by a shark. You are more likely to die from a bee sting than a shark bite (from a statistic viewpoint). One article I read said that the odds were like 1 in 11.5 million. Don't worry about it.

As to how far you should swim out, that would depend on how well you can swim. I would be more worried about getting out too far and getting tired than being attacked by a shark.
