Betta fish are very aggressive even while mating. Please keep a close eye on them to ensure neither of them get hurt. When she swims with her head down on the bottom of the tank then she is ready to spawn.

EDIT* Go to this web page and it will show you in pictures on how they spawn...http://www.bettatalk.com/how_bettas_spawn.htm

It sounds like the male is ready if he's building a bubblenest, but the female may not be ready to lay eggs. Since your female isn't white, you'll be able to see light vertical stripes on the thickest part of her abdomen, and she'll have a white dot on her underside (an ovipositor). Instead of leaving her in the tank where she could be injured if she's not ready to mate, put her in a container next to his tank where they can see each other. You can put them together once she gets the features I mentioned. If you want them to mate successfully, you need to have the tank set up properly first - this means a 5-10 gallon tank with no gravel (nothing at all on the bottom) and the water level lowered so it's only a few inches deep.

Here's a link showing the stripes and ovipositor: http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm#malefemale

Its kinda hard to tell what the male might do. Sometimes he dont like that female and sometimes the female my not be ready. But what usually happens is the male will take his fins and wrap around her. Bring her to the bottom and do his thing. When he is done she will have to go up and get air and with him already made a nest she will release the eggs into the nest.

Bettas are known for their aggresive behavior. In most cases, they will kill each other. It really isn't a good idea to keep them 2gether.

Yes, but give her a place to hide afterwards because he'll kill her. You have to remove her after he fertilizes her eggs.

The fry will need baby food. What are you feeding?
