Newborns should eat every 2 to 3 hours, any thing in between is needing a new diaper, gas, or just wanting attention unless their sick or in pain. When the baby eats and falls asleep you should wake the baby and make him/her finish their food. You have to teach the baby that this is feeding time. I know it is time consuming but if you let the baby eat on their terms then they continue doing that. So just be patient and Congratulations!! If the baby continues crying after you have met all physical needs then try to sing to him/her or just talk to him/her and remember you are not hurting the baby by letting them cry. Crying is actually good for them, it strengthens their lungs.

It's normal for a child to wake when they are hungry, and sometimes they will fall asleep during feeding. But, you want to make sure they finish eating everything, or else they will wake up again before their next feeding. One thing you can do to keep them awake is to change their diaper once they start falling asleep or uncover them (if you have them wrapped in a blanket) because the warmth of being held and covered will put them right back to sleep. Also, when you burp them, this tends to wake them up and also frees up some room in their tummy so they finish eating. You don't want your child to fall asleep everytime they are eating, or they won't learn how to fall asleep on their own and they will begin to associate eating with sleeping.

Yeah, babies don't really spend much time awake in the first couple weeks. Usually, they're really alert for about 24 hours after they're born and then they get really sleepy and pretty much just wake up to eat for a week or 2. At this age, when they fall asleep while eating, it's a sign that they're full.

Yup. They wake up hungry and then go back to sleep. Newborns don't have too much awake time. They sleep, on average I think, about 16 hours a day...it's just in 2 hour increments! He'll start having longer awake periods as he gets older.

One of mine was a "snacker". When I had to feed her, I kept waking her up until she got enough to last her for three or four hours. If I didn't keep waking her up, she'd just cry again in an hour. One trick I used.... take off her socks. For whatever reason, changing the "foot situation" seemed to keep her awake. Experiment, you might find more such tricks! Good luck.

Yes, for the first several weeks. As time goes by, they begin to be more and more alert between feedings.
Just make sure to change the diaper first so that when he falls asleep after eating you dont have to wake him up. :-)

my son does the same thing (that's the only time he ever cries), i'd think that it's perfectly normal. if you notice that they're not drinking and the milk is just falling out of their mouth then take the bottle away and try rocking them or holding them, it could be that they just need mommy's affection :)

Yeah my baby does that. She likes to be snuggled sometimes, but if she's crying its always for the bottle.

At this age hon, babies do only 3 things, eat, sleep, and poop, and they do them well,
don't let it worry you, it's perfectly normal, in the mean time bless those frequent naps while they last, they get fewer and farther between the older they get.
