My friend was downloading stuff and she installed some crap. she told me it was from here : http://www.osx-e.com/downloads/misc/flyakite_osx.html
i saw from far away that either a spyware/virus alert came up (i couldnt tell from far away) but she told me she removed it so i ddnt worry.

but now it seems its still on my comp. its still an option avialble on the add/remove place and i uninstalled it many many times. i cant find it in my program files though...

i think it's a virus because my cookies/saved forms are randomly being erased (only i use my comp unless my friends come over, but it's been days) and my firefox bookmarks are suddenly disappearing and when i turned on my comp today, my wallpaper was gone and my windows appearence turned into the default one (i remember changing it silver, and now it's blue) so yeah.

help?

Try scanning in safe mode with network.
Tap F8 when booting your computer. Choose safe mode with network.

Start in safe mode with network.
Start -> Run: and type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html... (Enter/OK)
Scan your computer.
If you fin something; delete it. Restart and do the same again. When the scanner finds nothing this scan is finish.

Reboot again in safe mode with network.
Start -> Run: type iexplore http://www.ewido.com/en (Enter/OK)
Scan your computer.
If you fin something; delete it. Restart and do the same again. When the scanner find nothing this scan is finish.

*NOTE: Do not surf the net or open any programs when doing this scans. This because you can start spyware/adware/viruses manually.

Now your computer is clean and you can reboot back to normal mode.

Now you need to download some security if you don't have it.

Download the new free version of Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a...
and Spybot-S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...

Download a free antivirus program like AVG, Avast or BitDefender.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
http://www.avast.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/product-14-en...

Also have a firewall. ZoneAlarm has a free one http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/c...

*NOTE: Only have one antivirus program and one firewall installed on your computer. Anti-adware/spyware are ok to have more of.

Also use Firefox or Opera as browsers. They are safer then IE.

1. You didn't specify what operating system you are using
2. You didn't say whether you had checked the website she thought she went to and determine whether it was clean or not.
3. You haven't explained why you let others download onto your machine (they are not inconvenienced when YOUR machine gets infected. Maybe they get embarrassed).
4. You haven't mentioned how OLD your machine is.

Yes, you should do all the anti-virus, anti-malware stuff that the other responders recommended. One point I would qualify slightly - you should only have 1 anti-virus software running on your machine at a time. If you want to use multiple a/v software products, that's fine, just not at the same time. But, consider the possibility that your hard drive, memory or motherboard is showing its age. That requires a professional 'laying on of hands' - it can't be diagnosed across the web. You did say this was a mac, right? Cause otherwise why would your friend be downloading mac software? You could have all sorts of code conflicts, if you're running a pc, and may have to reinstall your operating system and all your tools - basically, you may have to wipe your machine clean and start over.

Sounds like you have more then one virus. I just cleaned my friends computer the other day, kinda the same problem.

First i would download spybot search and destroy (it is free and works great). Update it to the latest version. Then Immunize. Then search your computer for spyware. If it comes up with a lot eliminate then in smaller groups (dont try to get rid of them all at once) otherwise the software might crash (then viruses are getting smarter).

Then after that search your computer again with AVG. It should work. If not try quarentining the virus then deleting it.

If that does not work i would download Ad-ware SE personal (also free) and search your computer with that and try to eliminate it with that software (i use both avg and ad-ware, because sometimes one finds stuff the other does not).

If that does not work (then dont hate me) resart your computer and try the above again. (sorry that seems like the only option).

If that doesnt work i would call some perfessional help.

Hope that helps!

You can run Kaspersky, online scanner direct from their server in Russia, rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. Perform a complete scan, as it will not conflict with your own antivirus program. Will kill the virus in real time. Can take upto two hours to scan depending on how many running processes, and how many programs installed. Reboot after realtime scan and virus killed.
