Hedges every time - they are easily renewed, can be kept at a preferred or any other height, and add more colour to the garden.

Hedges look neat and tidy when they are kept and looked after, but not when they haven't been cut. So I'll say fences.

It all depends on what & who it is for. Personaly i go for fences because(a) you can make it in days,(b) you only have to paint it twice a year & not cut 30 times & (c) you can nail Catherine Wheels to them on Nov 5!.
