Do any of them acknowledge the complete lack of impact on drugs the "war" is having, other than to turn people who would otherwise not be, into criminals?

I'm not saying drugs are good... they're not good for you or society. But we tried prohibition with alcohol & that fell into a mess of gangs with guns, bootleggers & dirty cops.
How is the current drug war any different?

Isn't addiction recognized as a disease.
Why is it treated as a crime?

Skull... nobody believes that drugs can't lead to violence, crime, poor decision-making in general... etc.

But why do people who get hooked on drugs (due to many reasons, varying from being curious/stupid to self-medicating for trauma/depression) and then move to crime when they find...

1) no effective treatment, unless they happen to be a super rich celebrity/politician/CEO who can afford to take a few months off from life & get counseling.
2)public stigma... who wants to admit they have a problem, when vocalizing their use could land them in prison, loose their house or kids... etc?
3)prohibition of drugs was instigated by racism & xenophobia (marijuana: prosecute migrant farm workers; opium: oppress chinese immigrants who built our railways... etc)

4) The "Partnership for a Drug Free America"'s primary source of revenue/donations come from.... drumb roll please:
Beer, Wine & Liquor producers!

Drugs make money. They don't want to lose that money. The war on drugs makes money across the board. The more you fight the war on drugs, the more money needs to be spent to buy the ammo and equipment to do so. We have watched a war on drugs continue on with the reverse effect for what... 30+ years now? Nothing has slowed down in the drug world, if anything it has increased 100 times what it was. Drugs are bad, and they do kill people. I have no doubts on that subject. However take weed as an example. Not only does it contain medicinal purposes it also is a heck of a lot better for you than alchohol is it not? The only thing weed really destroys is your lungs. Not that we can say that is a good thing, but its better than all the damage alcohol is known to cause. Not to mention you can be soaring and still drive a car safely as to where when you are really drunk you can't. But anyways enough of my endorsement for the good stuff.... The war on drugs is a joke and needs to be ended. It is a waste of tax payers money. Plain and simple.

the sad answer - not one of them.

while there are differences between some of the candidates, on this issue they walk in perfect lockstep.

the 'war' on drugs wastes about $40 billion dollars a year and accomplishes absolutely nothing other than to fill our prisons with people guilty of non-violent crimes - who exit prison hardened and often violent criminals.

and things like marajuana there is no justification for even keeping it illegal, other than the utter lack of nads to actually look at the nation and simply state that this makes no sense and should stop.

Nope. But I might vote for one that says "it's time to get serious in the war on drugs by executing dealers and military strikes against drug producing locales."

Let me add some logic to this topic. Substance abuse is in fact ILLEGAL and is a legitimate crime. Studies have legitimately PROVEN that drug addiction gradually progresses to VIOLENCE. Addiction is not a disease, and am repulsed and disgusted to read that. We have control of our brains with exception of Liberals who would advocate your cause.

Not a single one. The oil companies know that a new cleaner burning fuel can be made from pot. It would be cheaper and and they pay all politicians to keep it from being legal. It would be political suicide for them to buck the oil companies.

I'd hate to see an end to the war on drugs. just end marijuana prohibition. keep fighting coke, crack, heroin, acid etc. the DEA won't like it, taking away their easy, safe, cooperative busts and making them face real criminals instead.

Only the Libertarians are for ending the war on drugs.

The government (AKA the man) will never rid of the drug problem in the U.S - it is a control mechanism.
