AMERICA is vast continent(group of nations or countries).Others are:Europe, Asia,Africa and Oceania.Esentially, any person born in America is an American(like european, asian african, etc). The American continent has 4 regions to know: North America(México included;the real country's name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos),Central America,The Antilles(Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles) and South America. Thus, any person born in any of these countries is an AMERICAN and after is natural born of a specific country(mexican, peruvian, colombian, etc). The USA is the only country who has no "natural or original name"(it's unification of states) like the others;for that reason you took the shorthand name of americans for your citizens Right?
In conclusion,an American is from AMERICA(not only a US citizen!!).You have to know that.
Do you agree?

Well, yes, there are two continents, north and south, with lots of countries.
The problem is, what am I supposed to say when I refer to myself and other citizens of this country?
If there were a term, I'd use it.
But, since my country has a sort of non-name -- as opposed to, say, Canada or Brazil -- what am I?
It's kinda nutty, but there weren't other countries here when this one was named.
So the country is the United States (which people understand to mean this country, and not Mexico), and I'm an American.
I do realize that everyone from these two hunks of land are all Americans, in a different sense, but they can say what they are more specifically, such as Canadians and Brazilians.
We just don't have a real name.
Oops! I started replying before I finished -- yes, we do it because we have no real name.
BTW, Canadians refer to my country as "south of the border" (which is what we call Mexico), you know, just to tweak us.
Yes, there's "U.S. citizen" but that's wordy.
I thought we could use "Usans" -- for USA-ans, but I doubt it will catch on.

Precisely why I tell people I'm a United States citizen, rather than an American. Although a good portion of the world believes an American is a citizen of the United States, and not any another country on the north or south American continents.

I'm going to say the same thing to you that I said in another thread very similar to this one. By the way, don't talk down to me.
"American" can have many meanings. The USA is the only country where "American" refers to nationality and citizenship, though. You may be a resident of the South American continent if you live Brazil, for example, and you could call yourself an American or South American, but that wouldn't denote your nationality or citizenship in any particular country. It'd be like calling yourself European or African. Geography and national identity are mostly defined by countries' borders, not to say that there are no other important factors. So, when the word "American" is used, it's used in the more relevant sense, referring to a citizen of the United States of America.
We are the United States (we have fifty states) of (the continent called North) America. What should we be calling ourselves? United Statesians? "American" is the most logical designation. You are reaching a bit. We took that name because, at the time of our founding, we were the first country to break away from colonial rule. We were comprised of 13 separate British colonies that became states after independence. That's why we're called the United States of America. When we became an independent country, we were the only one of our kind in the Americas.
Everybody acknowledges that "America" can refer to the American continents AND citizens of the USA. You're overreacting a bit.

"Canada" is the name of the largest British colony that became part of the modern federation.
"Mexico" is really the name of city but is now applied to an entire federation. Then of course there's Belize, El Salvador, and Quebec.
Ecuador is named so because there's a line through it on a map.
Argentina is named as such because the Spanish found silver there.
"Columbia" is just another European name for both the continents were talking about. That's why there is a British Columbia just as there is a Republic of Columbia
ie: Christopher Columbus=Columbia
Amerigo de Vespuci= America
What's your point?

Please stop advocating this illogical cause. You can not be a citizen of a continent. You have trouble comprehending that, for an unknown purpose. Thus, logically as our country is the United States of AMERICA we have the privilege to call ourselves just that. Also, "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" is not the legitimate name of Mexico, as Mexico does NOT have established states, but rather cities and territories. Be aware of those pesky border patrol agents!

The Antilles are islands in the Caribbean and thus would be Caribbeans, not Americans. Pretty sure if you started calling a Puerto Rican an American they would get upset. Call a Honduran an American and see what they say. So, no I don't agree with you.

Partially. If you truly want to break it down by continent then it would be North American or South American. Those would be more comparable to European and Asian.
