The engine might have flooded when you pressed the gas to keep it running.
Try it again in about 30 minutes.
It definitely sounds like a vacuum leak is causing the idle problem.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Maybe filter is restricting fuel or pump is going. Also may be a sensor related to fuel. If debris gets on mass air flow sensor computer be confused as to how much air is passing sensor and may lean out fuel delivery. M.A.F. is located in air ilet behind filter in most cars. The coolant temp sensor is anouther sensor that will affect fuel. If sensor tells computer coolant is -40 computher will then fatten fuel delivery causing engine to flood. This sensor is usually located in head, but some times it can be found in a intake passage.
If you performed a motor wash recently I would think problem my be spark related. In this case it would be best to give water time to evaporate, then locate bad wire or coil.
In any case it dosn't sound like you should drive on road. Time for a tow truck. Sorry

you could have water in the gas tank. They make fuel additives the take care if this problem. When you were putting gas in was there a tanker truck at the gas station filling the underground tanks. NEVER get gas while they are filling the tanks at the station. This stirs up all the dirt and water in the underground tanks. 9 times out of 10 you will get water if you try this.

what year nova? it sounds like its starving for gas. or if you have a carburator, sounds like the choke is not closeing. in eigther case you need some one with more knowlege in cars. if theres a carb. try pressing the gas peddle down, wide open.(the car not running) then on top of the carburator push down the butterfly shaped plate until it closes. then try to start the car. if it does let it run for 5 to 8 minutes. the old cars with carburators ,you had to press the gas peddle to close the choke be for you could start the car.

Sounds more like a fuel pump or fuel filter. Hopefully filter, since they cost pennies compared to a pump.

No.
I'd check for a vacuum leak in the intake system sucking air.
