Being a Yankees fan my self, I was disappointed to see we had #30(last) pick in the first round..and since we didn't win the world series..why would we have last pick?

its not like football where the farther you go in the playoffs determines your pick spot

im MLB its determined by last seasons record alone

i dont recall if the yanks had the best record in 2006 or whether they made a trade involving the team who eventually would have the best record in 2006

point is it goes by regular season record. nothing else

First of all, I'll correct a false statement in the above answer - baseball does NOT, and has never, allowed the trading of draft picks. The only way to get extra picks is via the loss of a certain class of free agent, which would then allow a team a pick(s) in the supplemental round.

The draft order is based on regular-season standings only, not on the distance a team goes in the playoffs. It's also important to note that the supplemental round this year will have about 35 choices, because of rules introduced regarding the rewarding of such picks. That means second-round choices may not be as prime as in past seasons.

The Mets & Yankees finished last year with 97 wins, best in in the Majors.

But I'm not sure how they determin which one get's the 29th pick and who get the 30th pick.

But other factors like free agent aquisitions play a huge factor in the draft. For example, Mets loose their 29th pick to San Francisco after they aquired class A free agent Moises Alou in the off season.

The draft order is decided by the teams record at the end of the regular season.

Most of the time, teams will trade within the draft and aquire different draft positions.

For example, the Texas Rangers trade their 2nd round and 3rd round pick for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1st round pick. Then the Rangers would have their 1st round pick as well as the Devil Rays 1st round pick.
