I was going through some of my grandpas belonging and I found several bank bags that said, banco de mexico 5000 pesos. I added them up to equal 15,000 pesos total. How much was that worth in 1980

From 1976 to early 1982, the rate was very close to 25 pesos to US $1. At that time, the largest circulating banknote was 10000 pesos (US$400 at the time and about 90 cents now).
The peso began collapsing in March 1982, and by September 1982, it had reached 150 to the dollar. On Labor Day 1982, Mexico nationalized the banking industry. It was the first time I had ever seen large numbers of Army troops in downtown Tijuana, guarding the major banks. It was pretty scary. I had friends that lost tens of thousands of dollars in that debacle.
