how does it compare to the book?

I do like the book, I think parts of the story are still very relevant to what happens today. I really like Howard Roark as a character.

I have Atlas Shrugged I bought them together so its next on my list to read :)

The movie with Gary Cooper is pretty good. It captures the feel of the book. They had to compress a lot, so they leave some stuff out, but it is very well-photographed and the feeling fits the book. Acting is good. Ayn Rand INSISTED the entire courtroom speech stay, and so Gary Cooper has quite a monolouge toward the end. There are times I think it's a little heavy-handed, but I think the book is too.

You like the book? The movie is good & does the best it can with an unwieldly plot.

PS: I dislike the book and think it is poorly written, but the movie is worth seeing if you like the book. That is as objective as I can be.

The movie also starred a young Patricia Neal, for whom this was her first co-starring role. Gossip [since confirmed] was that she and Cooper had a hot romance off-screen during the filming. Agree with previous answer regarding the photography. I went to the film with a real live architect and he laughed all the way through...it may have been deep & meaningful Ayn Rand philosophy, but it sure [according to my friend, anyway] missed the mark on what/who an architect is. Rand visited Frank Lloyd Wright's "Taliesin" [home estate and workshop] to get insights into architecture, but according to reports from that front, she made a real pest of herself...including hitting on some of the young architects and even the Master himself [negative results, BTW] and they were glad to see the last of her. SEE the movie! TAKE an architect!

Have you read "Atlas Shrugged"? It's very good. It actually explores what society would be like if we implemented "from each according to his means, to each according to his needs." Not a pretty picture, but important.

"The Fountainhead," as a movie, is quite faithful to the book. It is exceptionally interesting, and I highly recommend it.
