They aren't raking you over the coals; they are just disagreeing vehemently with you. You have to realize that other people are just as entitled to their beliefs as you are to yours. And they believe in what they believe as strongly as you do. Don't let it ruin your day.

Some people won't budge no matter how stupid they are, and so they attack the beliefs of others because they don't know how to defend their own beliefs--these are the ones who will attack you the hardest.

I know it's frustrating when all you are trying to do is to enlighten others. Some folks just don't want to be enlightened.

Ever since this country was formed. Read about the Continental Congress and some of the name calling and backstabbing that went on during the forming of this nation. Nothing much has changed. Just the sheer vitriol and negativity now has escalated to the point that you risk WWIII by just voicing an opinion.

This started when John Hancock and Thomas Jefferson were battling it out as members of Washington's cabinet.

So basically the answer to your question is, since the beginning.

Hancock was pushing for a national bank and Jefferson found that to be unconstitutional.

It always has been. That's called the marketplace of ideas. What is appalling is the intolerance and hostility directed towards those with other viewpoints. Most of this comes from the political Left, though not exclusively. People who claim to be in favour of the inclusion of other points of view are always shocked and amazed that there are other points of view.

When political correctness was embraced by the left. This soviet style of baiting a political opponent causes 1) fear of the truth. 2) denial of reality. 3) stagnation. 4) cultural suicide. Not a pretty picture. PC must be fought at all times, that is providing it is fought with honest debate with a slant toward what is compatible with human nature and the truth

We are no longer taught to respect other opinions. I think it's been the slow evolution of Political Correctness. Someone seems to be offended by anything you say.

When one comes on here and threatens my country and thinks it is okay, then they deserve a raking. I guess i could just block them and violate them but that is censorship.
