You can most likely go to a pet store and ask for a female. They are usually kept in tanks together. A female Betta has shorter fins than the males. Here is a picture of a female

And a site that has pictures of both sexes...http://www.oneworldinternetcafe.com/betta/
EDIT* Females are not gray. Females can be just as beautiful as males they just have shorter fins.

See this link: http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm#malefemale
People who think females aren't as colorful haven't see any of the recent ones in the hobby. Fins are shorter than a males, but there are short-finned males (called plakats) that can be mistaken for a female, even by breeders if they don't look carefully. Take a couple of the characteristics mentioned in the website (except for the vertical striping, this you should only see in a female ready to spawn) and if they all point to female, that's probably what you're seeing.

The females have short fins and will live together. The males are more colorful fins and fight other males. Goto a local pet shop, look in the aquariums for bettas and find a tank with several short finned bettas. These are females.

Short finned fish with a slimer, pointed head. Be careful some shops will have plakats on display and it is hard to tell the apart, plakats (short finned males) have a bullish, pug face

Its very easy. The males have long fins, and more color. The females don't have as much of a brilliant color, and the fins are not as large.

The girls are plain, with short fins.
Boys are brighter and have long, floaty fins.
Unless you're going to a pond in China, you should ask someone at your pet shop where the females are. After they mate, fighting fish...well, fight. So they're seperated unless they are being bred.

The males are more colorful, bigger, and have fuller, longer fins. The females are just puny and kind of ugly.

Males have much longer fins.
Males are much nicer, why would you want a female?
