Because they're mostly greedy. After you spend all that time getting rich, would YOU want to share it? Most normal people would probably say yes... I guess they think that they're just doing people a favor or something.

If you needed money for say, your local clean-up day at the park and needed a million dollars for playground equipment, your plea for donations would disappear into the throng of others pleading money for their own cause.
But if you had someone like Dale Earnhardt, Jr, doing a tv commercial for your cause - a lot of people would pay attention, because he has a huge amount of fans all over the world.
So most charities hire actors to do their commercials to plead their cause, because no one cares about Joe Blow, but apparently everybody but me cares about Britney Spears. Those actors DO contribute to their causes, but if they gave something to the millions of hands demanding money, they would have zero left of their millions. So they donate to one or two causes and try to protect their nest eggs in the bank. Believe me, beggars can bleed you dry if you let them, and most people who win the lottery find this out the hard way when they go broke after a few years giving money to all their family and friends.
