I have a website that I need to update. I have a website person who usually does it for me, but I want to be able to do it myself. How do I get to the right place in order to make changes? Do I type domain.example.com, or what? I have the password, I just don't know where to go to get started.

It depends, each server is different. Most likely, you need an FTP client and you connect via FTP and edit the files that way. Try using SmartFTP. You can try connecting to ftp.yourdomain.com.

I'm a website designer, at http://www.falloutsoftware.com so let me explain...
When editing websites, website designers use something that's called an FTP program. These FTP programs are free to use and you can download them from the internet. Some of the most popular FTP programs are: cuteftp, smartftp and filezilla. I personally use filezilla. Simply google these names and find the download link. Install, and youre ready to go.
To log in to your FTP account to have access to your files, you need to know your domain name, and then simply replace the "www" part with "ftp". so it looks something like this:
ftp.mydomainname.com
You will then need to know your username and password for your ftp account. This information has been provided to you in a "welcome" email when you or your previous designer signed up for your hosting account. This information is also sometimes provided by your hosting company on your account page, If you know your hosting company account username and password, log in to their site, and then find your FTP login info, as it is different from your hosting services account login.

Ask the person who updates the website for you where the website is stored. Then you can just go to there and update it.

Every website is different about company or design form... but you could check that design site's option or find help (AQQ) !
