Good point! but in fact there was not a defacto winner of the war of Independence even though the Americans say they won.

In reality the British gave up went home because the cost of fighting the war of attrition in America was crippling !.- It drained rmen and resources from what was seen has a far more profitable and urgent campaign to kick the French out of India.

History shows that the British did kick the french out of India adding its wealth to the growing British empire!
which angered the french,, Iin retaliation the french sent troops to help the Americans ,

The rest is history!

Excellent point. The Americans have a tendency to forget the Hessian mercenaries King George sent from his native Germany, mad as a hatter he was at the time, and also the fact we were fighting massive wars in Europe- the whole American tantrum was but a storm in a tea-cup.

Had the French not blockaded the Channel, we would have soundly thrashed their insolent hides- and I suspect the world would be a better place for it too.

What of the land that the new Americans stole from the loyalists- who'd taken refuge over the border in Canada?

Methinks there may be an issue of compensation.

About 1/3 of the troops used by the British during the American Revolution were Hessian. And they weren't mercenaries, they were conscripts.

It was effectively a civil war. They were all technically British, until the separatists won. Lots of Americans fought to stay British - they were called "Tories". The war also saw some major atrocities committed by both sides.

Cornwallis wasn't a Hessian. The mercenaries were germans, but there were plenty of redcoats as well. The Americans had declared their independence, so I don't think they could be called British.

You could possibly argue that the French won the war, since it was their blockade that led to surrender.

Irrelevant argument. The people fighting against the king were fighting to gain independence from the king. Once they won the war, they were no longer British.

was it Cornwallis who surrendered at Yorktown? i think our British friends would not appreciate you calling him a German mercenary.
