I just have the basic setup, and connect to thenet with roadrunner. What should I buy?

A router.
If you want to connect wirelessly it'll need to be a wireless router (and you'll need the 360 wireless adapter), otherwise you can just run an ethernet cable from the router to the back of the 360.

Yeah he's right, a router and an extra ethernet cable to hook up to the back of your xbox to the router. You have to buy an xbox live account to play online. It's like 70 for a year from the store, or 40 for 3 months; then after that you can pay fifty for a year or 8 dollars a month. The packages from the store come with a headset, usually. Road Runner should be fine for xbox live.

In addition to the X-Box, you need to buy (and subscribe to) X-Box Live...which ain't cheap.
Your internet connection MUST be high speed...which also ain't cheap.
