I'm 14 and I'm going to start my first year in high school next week and I need some tips on being able to manage my time. I had sort of a hard time during my previous years in school because I live quite far from my school. It takes an hour from my house to get there [without traffic]. I ride a bus going to school and back home because my mom can't bring me and fetch me to school. She's busy with her work. [she's a doctor.] My parents are separated so my dad can't help.

I leave my house at around 5:15 AM and get to school by 6:30 AM. My classes start at 7AM and end at around 4:30PM. My school bus leaves my school at 5PM and I get home at around 6:30-7:00PM. I've been complaining to my mom about this because I want to be able to do my homework and be able to get enough sleep.

I remember when I was in seventh grade I only got around 6-7 hours of sleep because of this. Can anyone help me manage my time?

I can't really do it on the bus ride home because I won't have any good source of light. :/

You have a real problem. Is it possible to nap on the bus? As for light, there are small lamps that can be attached to books. Maybe you can use one of those. You need at least 8-9 hours sleep at your age. Can you go to bed earlier. Obviously, you can't change your commuting time, so you need to change your methods. One recommendation is to study your hardest subject first when you are not completely exhausted and leave the easiest subjects for last.

If the school buses in your area are in anything like the ones in our area, you won't get much work done on the bus. When you study, you need to be able to concentrate and retain the information.

What you will need to do is set a standard study time and stick to it, even when you don't want to. Use weekends to work on research projects and things of that nature. Also use weekends to review and study for tests. Use week nights to complete homework and do last minute studying (not to take the place of in-depth studying) for the next day's tests.

Mainly you will have to adjust to more strict rules than what you've been used to, more students, and being the low man on campus. Teachers will expect more out of you than they did at your middle school.

If you stay on top of your work you should do well. However, once you get behind, it's very easy to get overwhelmed. That's why you need to form good study habits and force yourself to stick to them.

I know you don't want to study all the time; it's high school and you need to have fun too. It's a balancing act, but I guarantee if you learn how to do this now, it will help you tremendously in college and in your adult life. Good luck with it!

Try and do your reading and study for tests on the morning bus ride, when there's light. Save all the written home work for home, unless it's just multiple choice. Hope this helps.

Try to do most of your homework on the bus ride to and from school. If any of your teachers give you the option to do your work in class, definitely take advantage of it! The first year of high school isn't going to be as hard as your anticipating it to be.
