Actually that is a huge matter of debate in Latin America. Many Latin Americans resent the United States for proclaiming themselves as Americans. I think they began to say US is America when the immigrants from European countries began to come in in the 1800s.

Wrong. That's two continents, so those people are called North Americans (or Norte Americanos), and South Americans (Sur Americanos). Since The United States of America is the only country in the world with America in it's name, people simply shorten the word to Americans- the rest is a mouthful.

America is the shorthand of the United States of America that is recognized by most nations. It is similar to calling the People's Republic of China (the full name of the nation) just China. Everyone knows what you are talking about. Read the wikipedia article, specifically under etymology to understand.

It's idomatic yo!
The reason we are called Americans is because we are people from the United States of America. So it's shorter to call us Americans. If you learn a little bit about history you will learn how the USA was formed.
If Bolivians and Panamanians want to call themselves Americans they can. No one is stopping them.
Heck the Chineses and Arabs can call themselves Americans too if they want/ No one is stopping them.
What is your point?

Actually, we are North America and South America, two continents, with a region called central america in the middle connecting the two. Although I realize we are not the ONLY americans, we are indeed americans.

Wrong. USA=United States of America, in case you didn't know what USA stands for. So therefore, it is perfectly logical to call ourselves Americans as opposed to United Statesian or whatever half-baked name is running through your mind.
