if a 3rd party online bill payment co. messes up and puts money in my account, am i liable for that money, or are they?

Don't touch it!

Call them, tell them that you are not entitled to this money and that they did a mistake.

If you don't return their money, eventually they will find their mistake and then they will withdraw the monies back from your account.

Speaking from a bankers point of view DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!

Even if they don't find there mistake until months from now they'll take that money back when you least expect it and they don't have to notify you. If you want call them to get it resolved quickly because 9 times out of 10 someone else is looking for that money

You are always liable for money found in a bank error and corrected. Don't think you have come upon any sort of windfall here.

Don't touch it. It has happened to me. Poor young guy was bouncing checks right and left before he realized that he had put his hard earned money into my account. I notified the bank immediately when I found the money in my account that didn't belong to me. I believe in Karma and treat others the way I wish to be treated.
