Do you enjoy it? Do you or loved one have a shop they hang around in? Do they show an interest in the tools and what is going on?
Even though I followed Dad into auto mechanics, I got some instruction in woodwork too. My dad and his brother got started in their dad's cabinet shop. After Granddad died, my uncle took over.
As they worked, I would often be found using a sand block on a piece of wood or hammering different size nails into another. I was totally forbidden to use the electric tools but I would watch them as they used the table saw, drill press, and lathe. Under supervision, I was shown how to use a saw, a brace and drill, and a square.
You can do some small projects together as his skills improve later on .

Teach them early if they really have an interest in it. This way they will develop better skills and craftsmanship. Don't judge their work too critically, encourage them and explain what could be done better. Show them, let them try again and move on the the next project.

If they mess it up, either let them try again or let them move on. The idea is to allow them to continue the interest and gradually learn the skills on their own. Encourage them all the way, that is the answer.

I don't see the problem of teaching them some of the safer techniques until they get to high school.
