Tornadoes usually travel from the southwest to the northeast.

If you're in a mobile or portable building, you should immediately evacuate it. If you're in a structure with a foundation, go to the lowest point that you can and away from any windows (usually an inner hall or a bathroom is best).

Listen to NOAA weather radio, or get Weatherbug software, a free program which will notify you (if your internet connection is working) when the National Weather Service issues tornado warnings.

Cloud systems that tornadoes are associated with generally travel from the southwest to the northeast, however this by no means, dictates which direction a tornado will move, although it will always move with the cloud it is associated with.

Open all windows!!

Move into the basement or storm cellar if you have one. If you do not, move to the interior part of the structure, preferably a room with no windows. If that is not possible, kneel with your back against the wall that contains to most glass...DO NOT lean on the glass.

If you have a pillow or other soft item nearby, use it to protect your head face if you have time to get to it.

Regarding Thomas H Answer,

IS it true that if you open windows before a tornado,Which is right?

Opening the windows is absolutely useless, a waste of precious time, and can be very dangerous. Don't do it. You may be injured by flying glass trying to do it. And if the tornado hits your home, it will blast the windows open anyway.

The news or radio usually has a forecast avialable for the public. You just need to check with that. If you are outside you need to get in a ditch and cover up with something heavy (if available) If you a re inside get in a bathroom and duck...or you can get low...or get under a matress. hope this helps! good luck!

Open some windows, go to the basement or a ditch so you don't get hit by debris
