Translate the following: The sum of three consecutive even integers is less than 25.

x + y + z < 25

1x + 2x + 3x < 25

x + (x+1) + (x+2) < 25

x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 25

Translate the following: The sum of three consecutive odd integers is less than 40.

x + y + z < 40

1x + 2x + 3x < 40

x + (x+1) + (x+2) < 40

x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 40

The sum of three consecutive even integers is less than 25.

x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 25

x, x + 2 and x + 4 are the three consecutive even integers. Since 3 even integers will sum as even, that can be written as 3x + 6 < or =24 (the highest even integer) and x < or = 6

The sum of three consecutive odd integers is less than 40.

x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 40

If x is odd, x + 2 and x+ 4 will also be odd. For example, 7, 9 and 11 are consecutive odd numbers. Since sum of three odd numbers will be odd, that can be written as 3x + 6 < or = 39 and hence x < or = 11

The first one is x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 25.

The possible candidates: 2+4+6 or 4+6+8 and so on. The first number in the sequence is X, and the subsequent are x+2 and x+4.

Similar for the second: x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 40.

The value of x in both equations needs to be either odd or even depending on the question. The fact that they are consecutive integers, and either odd or even explains why you need the x, x+2, x+4 progression.

Consecutive integers always alternate between even and odd. If x is the first integer and it's even, then the next EVEN integer would be x+2, and the one after that would be x+4. The sum of these is x + (x+2) + (x+4). If the sum is less than 25, then x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 25.

Likewise, if x is odd, then the next ODD integer will be x+2 and the odd number after that is x+4. You should be able to figure out the right answer now.

x+(x+2)+(x+4)<25

x+(x+2)+(x+4)<40

If it's consecutive integers it's always x, (x+1), (x+2), (x+3) etc.
If it's even or odd consecutive it's x, (x+2), (x+4), (x+6), etc.

x+(x+2)+(x+4)<25
let an even integer be x.then the next consecutive (following) even integer would be x+2(eg.2,2+2=4) and the next would be x+4(eg.2,2+2=4,2+4=8).

x+(x+2)+(x+4)<40
same as above.
let an odd integer be x....

x + (x+1) + (x+2) < 25

because consecutive means going up in 1s

x + (x+2) + (x+4) < 40

because consecutive odd numbers go up in 2s
