The first book in the UK is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the US it is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The covers of the books are different, too.

Both countries have "adult" editions that are the same book with less I'm-reading-a-kid's-book covers.

In the end, there's no reason to be concerned about the subtle differences. The story is the same in all US and UK editions.

Sometimes the title is different (e.g. the British version of the first book is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone, while the US version is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone), and usually different versions are edited for spelling (British colour, US color), etc. Of course, versions in a foreign language need to be translated, so the exact wording differs.

There's a whole load of information on the internet already if you look hard enough. The HP Lexicon is an invaluable resource and notes every detail altered, every minute change made.

There are also a few discrepancies made between translations to non-English languages. I believe that in the German translation of Philosopher's Stone, Blaise Zabini was assumed to be a girl, although this was later corrected in Half Blood Prince.

The version published for the United Kingdom is controlled by Bloomsbury, and its spelling follows British convention. For the first book, the title was slightly different. The version published for the United States is controlled by Arthur A. Levine, itself a subsidiary of Scholastic, and its spelling follows American convention. The adult version is not significantly different from the standard American version, except for its typesetting criteria. The margins are generally wider, the typeface smaller, and the style generally more formal.
