Miami can be pretty 'uninteresting' if you don't speak Spanish! We were there for 14 days and rarely ran into anyone whose first language was English. The people can be very unhelpful to say the least.
As for it being the most interesting city in the state... obviously, you haven't traveled the state very much. Get out of Miami-Dade County and see what else is out there.

I question your claim that it is safer in Miami than in West Palm Beach. That is not true. I also question that it is "more interesting." Name one thing in Miami that you can't find in other parts of Florida. Clubs? Beaches? Movies? Amusement Parks? State Parks? Museums? Bowling? Strip Joint? Golf? Sporting Events? Concerts? All that can be found in any number of other places, and what is "interesting" varies from person to person. Why does everyone insult Miami? I am not sure. It is probably not warranted, but if everyone there has your attitude about the rest of the state, then I think I have an idea what the problem is.

NO. Let me rephrase that. HELL NO.
I live here...the people are ****, nobody wants to (or can) speak English, so if you don't speak Spanish you're SOL.
The traffic sucks, the drivers are the worst on the freaking planet, the city does not have the infrastructure to support the population that now lives here. The cost of living is through the roof, whether you're a renter or an owner. Crime is terrible. I won't walk in my own neighborhood after dark. (And I'm a trained former army sergeant AND kickboxer).
Go to Jacksonville, FL, and nearby St. Augustine. Those places have more character and interest in one strip mall than Miami has in all of Dade county.
I'm leaving as soon as my husband finds a job elsewhere.

I was born in Miami and raised in the Fort Myers, FL area, and i am going to have to disagree with you. I don't think anything in the Miami area is "interesting". It's quite obvious we have different views as to what would be considered "interesting". The crime isn't the issue as that is going to happen anywhere you go. Miami can be fun, don't get me wrong, but there is nothing there that stands out to me. Nothing that makes me yearn to return. I prefer the Tampa/St. Pete area. It has much more character than Miami could ever.

I wouldn't say it's the most interesting area just because I live here and I've seen all it's got to offer but, it has a lot of culture and flavor. Here you'll find food from all over the world, beautiful beaches, beautiful people and beautiful languages all around you. Not to sound like a creep but I like people watching, just observing different people. here it's like having the world in one place. I think I'm friends with at least one person from every corner of the world and to me that's something I wouldn't get out of living in other areas of Florida. I have the beach near me, some of the best shopping you can find, and with all it's craziness there's always something to do and new people to meet. Yeah, there's problems here but honestly where isn't there problems? I don't know who insults it and I can think of a few reasons why they would but they probably have never lived here.

It is okay. The beaches and lighthouses are awesome. Let me not even tell you about the fabulous shopping. But, Orlando has all the theme parks. Miami just has a bad reputation, but it really is an awesome city.

I just moved to Fort Lauderdale from Tampa, and have to go to Miami to work. After seeing a lot of other places in the state, I have to say that Miami is NOT at the top of my list. I like Ft. Lauderdale, but not Miami. The only part I really like is South Beach and the Art/Design District. That's it. The true city itself, downtown, is dirty; by looking at the people who live there, I'd be afraid to walk around there alone late at night; the streets are a mess to learn-there are areas where the street numbers are random; people drive like lunatics-waaaayyy too much road rage; too many people live there-the traffic is insane, just to drive from one corner to another you get stuck in traffic. Some areas in the outskirts aren't bad, like some parts of Miami Lake or Doral, but in general, I really don't like Miami.
I think the areas of South Beach and the Design District are fascinating-it's great for going people-watching. Miami is great for latin food, too, and the multicultural experience. When my guy and I get latin food cravings (we're both latinos) we go down there for dinner, and it's nice trying to guess who's from where by people's accents. But in terms of everything else, there's lots better elswhere:
Tampa's housing is A LOT cheaper and nicer; Orlando's clubs are hopping right now (my fiancee and I like to go clubbing, but Miami's, despite being world-famous, are basically dead right now, while Orlando's are hosting world-class DJ's every other weekend! Insane), and no one can beat Orlando in terms of amusement parks with Disney World; Fort Lauderdale's beaches are prettier and less crowded than Miami's; there's just as much to do in downtown Fort Lauderdale and it's a lot safer, too; West Palm is horse-country central with its huge hunter/jumper barns (sorry, I ride) for the rich and famous; Clearwater and Saint Pete beaches have the whitest sand; the best university in FL is in Gainesville...I can go on.
I'm sure Miami has its advantages for those who have lived there their whole lives or who have families there, who are used to it, or for people who only know Spanish (you really don't need to know English to live in Miami.) But after living in other areas of FL, Miami really is at the bottom of my list.
