There is a lot of factors involved in hosting your own web site.
Assuming you have Windows XP Professional you can install IIS from the Add/Remove Windows components.
There are other options for hosting your own website like XAMP. It is a light version simple install that is fairly easy to use.

Another factor is if your behind a firewall you need to open and forward port 80 to the computer that will be doing the hosting.

If you don't have a fast upload speed on your internet connection the people visiting your web site will not be happy.

As well most home users IP changes, with this IP changing all the time it doesn't help any with hosting your website.

If your for some reason talking about setting up a real web server and say like Windows Server 2003, again there you would want to install IIS from the add/remove windows components.

IIS tends to keep the root directory of the website under C:\\Inetpub\wwwroot\

You need to FIRST -- BE SURE ITS LEGAL for you to do it. If you are on a HOME DSL line it is probably against the TERMS OF USE of your ISP. So check with them before you even worry about it.

Then, if you can I would use Apache webserver. Its available for Linux or Windows. Its very stable and is the most used webserver at the present time. If you are on windows just download and install WAMP (windows, apache, mysql, php) package. It is all bundled and easy to instal. Or get the Linux version and run a linux system - much more stable. (Just my opinion).

You will have to port forward your router to that computer if you are behind a router.

start you own webserver :)good thought

it's a kinda easy thing and little tough

first you need a domain name if you really don't wanna buy a domain name just go to www.no-ip.com and get a domain name

it will be something like pcube.no-ip.org etc

then you need a external ip address

install IIS 6 if you have Windows XP professional or else download apache and configure it.

when you finish with it just enter your external ip address in no-ip.com

for finding your external ip address go to www.whatismyip.com

just configure your iis and your firewall or your router to forward the port 80 to your computer and you are done :)

if you need any help you can contact me anytime as my work is to make servers only :)

You need a PC that is always connected to internet.
You need some webserver software like apache

nothing else is needed.

For example,
if you have windows/linux installed on your pc.
now install apache on this pc.
configure it.
put your website files

now your website will be running.

I hope this helps
