So I am in the bakery of the grocery store, and I pick a long french bread with poppy seeds. And this woman comes up to me and says if you buy that don't take any drug tests. What is she talking about, I don't do any drugs, and noone has any reason to want to drug test me. I she just a crazy woman?

So if I like poppy seeds I am on drugs? How odd! That doesn't seem fair, why do they still sell them then?

Poppy seeds are from the opium plant which can be processed to make heroin. But you would have to eat A LOT of poppy seeds for it to show up on a drug test. And you most likely would never be able to get high from them inless you ate like a gallon or something of straight poppy seeds (just making a guess) so there is nothing to worry about...some people are just crazy about stupid stuff like that...Keep on eating the bread...no worries! I love lemon poppy seed muffins!

LOL It was rude of her to say something like that. She does not know if you are a drug user and need/will be drug tested any time soon. However poppy seeds are made with the same particles that opium is made with. So if by any chance you do get test you will fail because the poppy seeds will come up as opium.

Seems strange to approach a random stranger and mention that, but it is true that you will test positive for opiates on a drug test for a few days aft eating bread with poppy seeds.
A president was set for this when a lady lost her job after testing positive in a random drug test at work, she had eaten two poppy seed bagels for breakfast the day before, she sued and won.

Oh silly. Poppy seeds do NOT contain THC (that's marijuana).
On the other hand, poppies are used as the main ingredient in Opium, and according to the Mayo Clinic website:

Answer
Poppy seeds contain morphine. If you eat poppy seeds, you will excrete morphine in your urine, which may result in a positive urine test for opiates. However, the morphine level in your urine after eating poppy seeds is very low — typically below the detection threshold for most drug screening tests — and the morphine is usually cleared from your body within four hours

Opium is made from poppy seeds, although I don't know what dose you would have to eat to test positive. I am guessing that you would have to eat a large dose to show up on a drug test. She probably saw that episode of Seinfeld where Elaine tested positive for opium after eating a poppy seed muffin.

Opium is a drug and it's made from poppys. People say if you eat enough of it you can test positive for opium on a drug test. But that part might be an urban legend though. Are you being funny? I thought everyone knew this.

Some poppy seeds are considered to have a light drug effect but only when eaten in huge amounts. Maybe that's what she meant, trying to make a joke.
